Metaphysically Interpreting Genesis 14:1-20
14:1And it came to pass in the days of Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of Goiim, 14:2that they made war with Bera king of Sodom, and with Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, and Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (the same is Zoar). 14:3All these joined together in the vale of Siddim (the same is the Salt Sea). 14:4Twelve years they served Chedorlaomer, and in the thirteenth year they rebelled.14:5And in the fourteenth year came Chedorlaomer, and the kings that were with him, and smote the Rephaim in Ashteroth-karnaim, and the Zuzim in Ham, and the Emim in Shaveh-kiriathaim, 14:6and the Horites in their mount Seir, unto Elparan, which is by the wilderness. 14:7And they returned, and came to En-mishpat (the same is Kadesh), and smote all the country of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites, that dwelt in Hazazon-tamar. 14:8And there went out the king of Sodom, and the king of Gomorrah, and the king of Admah, and the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (the same is Zoar); and they set the battle in array against them in the vale of Siddim; 14:9against Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of Goiim, and Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar; four kings against the five. 14:10Now the vale of Siddim was full of slime pits; and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, and they fell there, and they that remained fled to the mountain. 14:11And they took all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their victuals, and went their way. 14:12And they took Lot, Abram's brother's son, who dwelt in Sodom, and his goods, and departed.
14:13And there came one that had escaped, and told Abram the Hebrew: now he dwelt by the oaks of Mamre, the Amorite, brother of Eshcol, and brother of Aner; and these were confederate with Abram. 14:14And when Abram heard that his brother was taken captive, he led forth his trained men, born in his house, three hundred and eighteen, and pursued as far as Dan. 14:15And he divided himself against them by night, he and his servants, and smote them, and pursued them unto Hobah, which is on the left hand of Damascus. 14:16And he brought back all the goods, and also brought back his brother Lot, and his goods, and the women also, and the people.
14:17And the king of Sodom went out to meet him, after his return from the slaughter of Chedorlaomer and the kings that were with him, at the vale of Shaveh (the same is the King's Vale). 14:18And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was priest of God Most High. 14:19And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of God Most High, possessor of heaven and earth: 14:20and blessed be God Most High, who hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him a tenth of all.
14:21And the king of Sodom said unto Abram, Give me the persons, and take the goods to thyself. 14:22And Abram said to the king of Sodom, I have lifted up my hand unto Jehovah, God Most High, possessor of heaven and earth, 14:23that I will not take a thread nor a shoe-latchet nor aught that is thine, lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich: 14:24save only that which the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men that went with me, Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre. Let them take their portion.

What is the meaning of the word “Abram”? “Abram” means “exalted father,” and symbolizes the divine attribute in man which has faith in the powers invisible.
What is the meaning of the word “Lot”? The word “Lot” means “hidden, concealed.” Lot was a brother of Abram; he symbolizes the negative pole of faith.
Lot was taken a captive by Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him. Explain. Chedorlaomer and his kings symbolize the rule of sensuality in mortal man. Thoughts of sensuality overpower the negative pole of faith (Lot) and determine to carry it away to their own domain.
Scripture states that an Amorite, who lived by the oaks of Mamre and had two brothers, Eshcol and Aner, that were confederates of Abram, told Abram of Lot's having been taken captive. What is the metaphysical meaning of this passage of Scripture? The word “Amorite” means “vigor, determination, strength, renewal of life.” “Mamre” means "strength, firmness, fatness." “Eshcol” means “cluster of grapes.” “Aner” means “youth, sprout, waterfall.” While these thoughts are elemental and have not yet reached the spiritual plane of consciousness, they are faced toward the light and are friendly toward Abram, who symbolizes positive faith in God's spiritual presence. Consequently the Amorite told Abram of Lot's having been taken captive.
“And when Abram heard that his brother was taken captive, he led forth his trained men, born in his house, three hundred and eighteen, and pursued as far as Dan.” Explain. The three hundred and eighteen “trained men, born in his house,” symbolize disciplined wisdom and understanding, directed by the enlightened will. These powers make union with “Dan” (spiritual judgment), and pursue as far as “Hobah” (hiding place), where all thoughts of sensuality are cast out of consciousness; however, the substance which they have accumulated is preserved. Lot, the negative pole of faith, is reunited with Abram, the positive pole of faith.
After Abram (faith) has won the victory over sense consciousness, what results? All the kings come out to meet Abram at the vale of Shaveh. The “kings” symbolize, the executive power, and “Shaveh” means equalization. After a severe struggle and final victory over sensuality, an equalizing, harmonizing process is established in consciousness, and the Christ mind (Melchizedek, king of Salem) reigns supreme.
Abram refused to take to himself the goods which his trained men had brought back with them. Explain. To overcome sensuality one must put away all belief in materiality. In other words, material substance must be lifted up, transmuted into the fine essence of Spirit, before it can establish itself as faith in spiritual consciousness.
