When the first three lessons were given in January 2012, I gave them the name Unity Wings. Unity Wings is my vision of study groups forming to learn and apply all eighteen lessons of the original Unity Correspondence School.
Here was my announcement on November 15, 2011:
In January 2012 I will launch a class in Round Rock, Texas based on The Unity Society Correspondence School course. As far as I can tell, it is the first time in over 35 years that this pristine, classic Unity teaching is being used to teach Unity principles. I'm writing to invite people who live in the Austin area to join me Sunday mornings at 9am and I am also writing to invite people who are not in the Austin area to consider launching your own study circle.
The lessons of this course helped propel the tremendous growth of Unity from 1909, when Charles Fillmore wrote the first lesson, until 1973 when so many denominations thought that traditional language and metaphysical teaching was no longer fashionable. For nearly sixty-five years the course taught truth principles to laypeople and trained them for ministry. The language is somewhat dated, but the principles are timeless, the teaching is pristine and the presentation is clear and direct.
In October 2010 I spent three weeks in the Unity Archives scanning over 800 pages of the course material. From January until July 2011 I pulled from the material for my talks at Unity Georgetown. For the past several months I have felt a strong calling to bring this material back into circulation some meaningful way. This class and the collateral documents and lessons of this class are the fruit of that calling.
Will classic teachings resonate with a modern mind? Can they excite people as they did for nearly 65 years? All I can say is that they resonate with me and that I find them exciting. The "Sunday morning experience" will be 30 minutes of lesson and discussion followed by 30 minutes of chant, meditation and Silence, not all that different from how Charles and Myrtle led their classes many years ago. Truth is timeless.
