This week’s post is by Rev. Susan Choy, Spiritual Leader of the Unity Windward Study Group in Hawaii. A Unity minister, licensed Unity teacher, and meditation instructor, she combines Unity metaphysical teachings with prayer, meditation, breathwork, and contemplative practice to help people deepen their spiritual awareness and experience personal transformation. Where Do We Go When We Sleep? Journey to Other Worlds.

Rev. Susan Choy

Dear Unity Friends,

Welcome! Whether you’ve been part of the Unity family for years or are simply curious about exploring the deeper dimensions of spiritual life, I am delighted you’ve found your way here, and are considering passing through our “doorway” into greater light.

My name is Rev. Susan Choy, and I have the joy of serving on the Windward side of Oahu, Hawaii, as an ordained Unity minister, community prayer chaplain, certified 500-hour Kripalu yoga and meditation teacher, and a devoted Pranic Healer. Throughout my life and ministry, I’ve been fascinated by one question above all others: How do we awaken more fully to the magnificent spiritual beings we already are?

That question has inspired the creation of Doorways to Higher Consciousness — an alternative online community dedicated to exploring the rich wisdom of Unity alongside discoveries from contemplative traditions, modern spirituality, consciousness research, and practical methods for living with greater peace, joy, intuition, and spiritual awareness. Together we explore timeless truths that illuminate both our individual awakening and our collective evolution.

Our gatherings are interactive, welcoming, exciting, and experiential. Rather than simply listening to a lecture, you’ll be invited into thoughtful discussion, guided breathwork and meditation, reflective practices, and meaningful spiritual conversation in a warm, supportive community. This Sunday, August 2, 10:00 a.m. - 11:15 am (Hawaii Time), I hope you’ll join me for a most compelling presentation: “Where Do We Go When We Sleep? Journey to Other Worlds.”

Sleep occupies nearly one-third of our lives—yet what if it is far more than simply a time for physical rest? What if the hours we spend asleep are among the most spiritually significant experiences of our day? One of the great mysteries of life is that though we carefully plan our waking hours, we seldom give any thought to what may be happening during the hours when our bodies rest. Most of us assume that sleep is simply a biological necessity—a time to recharge before another busy day. But what if sleep is also one of God’s most beautiful classrooms, a time of grace when our spirits are freed to visit other worlds and meet with teachers, guides and loved ones who have passed?

Unity has always taught that we are far more than our physical bodies. We are spiritual beings expressing through human form. If that is true, then our awareness is not limited to our waking consciousness. During sleep, when the mind becomes quieter and the demands of daily life recede, we actually become more receptive to divine guidance, healing, inspiration, and inner wisdom. Countless people have awakened with the answer to a difficult problem, a creative idea, or a profound sense of peace they could not explain.

Perhaps you’ve experienced this yourself. Have you ever awakened knowing exactly what decision to make? Have you dreamed of a loved one and felt comforted by his/her presence? Have you received an insight in the middle of the night that changed the course of your day? Maybe even your life? Rather than dismissing these moments as coincidence, perhaps they are gentle reminders that Spirit is always communicating with us—even while we sleep.

A simple practice you can begin tonight is to dedicate your sleep to the Divine before you close your eyes. In the silence, affirm:

“Infinite Wisdom guides me while I sleep. My mind and body are renewed, my soul is open to divine guidance, and I awaken refreshed in Spirit, peace, and joy.”

Even if you don’t recall the details of a dream, simply beginning your day with gratitude and expectancy opens channels to greater spiritual receptivity. Then throughout the day, you may suddenly receive a burst of wisdom or insight regarding a present problem. Or you may experience an unusual sense of calm and reassurance because you have been visited by a deceased but never forgotten loved one.

So please mark your calendar this Sunday for a presentation that will surely transform the way you think about sleep. Drawing upon the metaphysical insights of Charles Fillmore and Eric Butterworth, together with insights from respected contemporary spiritual teachers and consciousness researchers, we’ll explore the deeper purpose of sleep, dreams, and the remarkable adventures of consciousness that may unfold while our bodies rest.

Together we’ll consider questions such as:

  • What actually happens to consciousness while we sleep?
  • Are dreams merely psychological, or can they also become vehicles for divine guidance?
  • Can sleep become a pathway for healing, creativity, and spiritual growth?
  • How might we participate more consciously in our nightly journey?

Whether you’ve long been fascinated by dreams or have simply wondered if there’s more to sleep than meets the eye, I believe you’ll leave with a renewed appreciation for the sacred rhythms of life.

If you’d like to join us, simply visit www.unitywindward.org and click on the Zoom link for Sunday’s gathering.

Until then, may your nights be filled with peace, your dreams with light, and your awakening each morning with a deeper awareness of the Presence that never sleeps.

With Warm Aloha blessings,

Rev. Susan Choy
