How God Brought Me Home Via A Heart Attack

On August 12, 2007 my husband, John, and I were returning from a very lackluster restaurant meal in Washington, DC when I had a heart attack.
John told me that I was so pale, the blood drained from my face, weak and out of it, that he was frightened that I would die in the car.
He drove me to Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, Maryland. I walked into the emergency room where I was told to fill out a form and take a seat.
I told the clerk, “I am having a heart attack.”
She instructed me to immediately come in and the next thing I knew I was laying on a table with leads attached to my chest and two people on each side of me silently studying the print out of an electrocardiogram. Finally, a tall dark haired man wearing surgical scrubs on my right broke the silence.
“At this moment, you are having a major heart attack,” he said.
I felt calm.
I knew that All is well.
I just knew that everything was happening perfectly.
Suddenly, a nurse to my left addressed me. “What is going on? Why are you so quiet? Most people get very upset when we tell them they are having a heart attack,” she almost yelled.
I was feeling so happy that I would just have preferred to relax on the table. Suddenly the words came out of my mouth, “Well, I guess that if I am having a heart attack then I must be in the right place.”
The doctor on my right told me, “ You need immediate placement of stents to keep the blood flowing in your heart. Do you consent to this procedure?”
“No problem,” I responded.
After the stents had been placed in my heart, the cardiologist who did the procedure told me, “The blockage in the heart is so big that if you don’t get immediate open heart surgery, you will be dead in a few hours. We can’t do the surgery here so we are going to medevac you to an emergency trauma surgery center in Washington. I must tell you that since it is Saturday night and not only is this place not designed to do such surgeries and because the surgeons there deal with trauma and not heart surgery, the likelihood that you will get what you need is basically zero. It doesn’t look good.”
I told him, “What are my options?”
He said, “Basically, none. This is all we can offer to save your life. I’m really sorry.”
They put me in a tiny helicopter with barely enough room for the pilot, the medic and the patient. At that point I lived with crippling fear of heights and major claustrophobia. I was having lots of panic attacks.
The medic said to me, “If you want I can sedate you. Most people have anxiety attacks in here.”
I told him, “I am having a heart attack. What do I care about an anxiety attack.”
I closed my eyes and relaxed into the moment.
I knew with absolute certainty that everything would work out. I just knew it.
When we landed suddenly I got a message. Tell them that you need to say something to the surgical team before the operation. I had no idea of what to say but I trusted this understanding so I told the medic what I had been told.
When I got to the trauma center, I was wheeled into a surgical suite complete with several nurses, an anesthesiologist and a surgeon who had completed a Fellowship in cardiac surgery in India.
I had been instructed to tell them something but I had no idea of what to say.
The surgeon looked at me and said, “We were told that you want to tell us something. What is it?”
Everyone was staring at me.
Then the words came out of my mouth.
“Please think of someone, alive or passed, whom you love, for a minute or two before your begin the procedure.”
The words were just perfect.
The anesthesiologist, an Asian lady, broke the silence by asking, “Do you want that before or after anesthesia?”
“I really don’t care,” I said.
Later on they told me that after cracking open my chest with a chisel and hammer, my heart was removed and placed on a block of dry ice for four and a half hours.
Two days later I first became aware that I was alive.
My husband, John, told me later that when spoken to, even under very deep sedation and pain meds following the surgery which involved every vessel in the heart, I spoke lucidly and even made jokes. I was consciously unaware of any of this.
Calm, peace and pure love enveloped me during the entire journey.
At every point I knew with absolute certainty that All is well.
In the midst of all the chaos I felt happy and serene.
