The Power of Our Words: One Important Factor in Spiritual Healing

Rev. Melissa Hill Greenbaum

“Sometimes we pray to a God outside of ourselves. It is the God in the midst of us that frees and heals. … You need to think of God, the all-powerful Healer, as being already within you, in every part of your mind, heart, and body.” — Myrtle Fillmore

Many of us know Myrtle Fillmore’s remarkable healing story. But have you ever considered that you, too, have a healing story waiting to unfold?

What does true healing look like? Is it something that happens to us, or is it also something we can learn to awaken within ourselves?

Myrtle Fillmore understood healing as a threefold process involving mind, body, and spirit. Together, these dimensions reflect the wholeness of each person as a unique expression of God. Our healing journey may involve many practices, including prayer, forgiveness, self-awareness, and a growing recognition of the divine presence within us.

One important factor in spiritual healing is becoming aware of the power of our words, thoughts, and feelings. The way we speak to ourselves can influence how we experience life, respond to challenges, and recognize the healing presence of God within us.

How often have you caught yourself saying, “I AM . . . tired, exhausted, or worn out”? While it is important to acknowledge how we feel, we can also become more intentional about the words we choose. A simple change in what we say after “I AM” can become a spiritual practice that helps us shift our attention from our present limitations toward the divine possibilities within us.

In Unity, the I AM represents our spiritual identity. When we consciously affirm life, love, strength, and wisdom, we remind ourselves that our present circumstances do not define the fullness of who we are. Our words can help us cultivate an awareness of the divine life that is always present within us.

Are you ready to make the conscious use of your words one important part of your healing journey, speaking life, love, and wisdom into your threefold being—mind, body, and spirit? If so, Lesson Two of the Fillmore Wings Study Program offers an opportunity to explore Myrtle Fillmore’s understanding of healing and the role our thoughts, words, and spiritual awareness can play in our journey toward wholeness.

You are invited to join a conversation, share your insights, and discover what these ideas may mean in your own life. During this four-week study of Healing, we will reflect on what it means to experience conscious communion with the Divine—the true source of life—and consider how affirmations rooted in Divine ideas can influence the way we think, pray, and live. Together, we will explore how these practices can become one important part of a larger journey of healing in mind, body, and spirit.

We're calling it Fall Into Fillmore: Healing. Classes begin Tuesday, October 6, 2026, and meet once a week throughout October for four weeks. Registration is $20 for all four classes. For more information or to register, visit https://frontporchwisdom.online/sit-a-spell/.
