What Charles Fillmore Said About Jesus Christ and the “More Abundant Life”
§14 We believe that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is alive and in the world today. We believe that the “more abundant life, ” which Jesus promised, is poured into the race stream as a vitalising energy, and that, when accepted in faith, it purifies the life-flow in our bodies, and makes us immune to all disease thoughts and disease germs.
“‘But,’ you say, ‘Jesus Christ is gone.’ I assure you that he has not gone. He is in our midst today. He has been seen again and again standing on this platform, and we absolutely know that he is in the fourth dimension, that he has a body.”
These were Charles Fillmore’s words from our stage here on Tracy Avenue to visitors at the opening of the Unity Conference and Healing Revival in 1923. Jesus, as our elder brother, took the next step in his spiritual evolution to what Charles Fillmore called “the fourth dimension.” As a more fully developed soul, he has the ability' to transcend what we know as time and space to continue to be a beneficial presence in this world. I know that Mr. Fillmore and others saw, and people continue to see, Jesus’ presence.
When Jesus said that he came in order that we all might have a more abundant life, he was reminding us that, because he demonstrated the presence of abundant supply, health, peace of mind and more, that same abundance not only exists, but is available to us all. However, in order to experience this abundance, we must accept it through a change in our thoughts and beliefs.
We originate from perfect life, and because there is nothing in Divine Mind other than perfection in all things, our heritage is health, wholeness here, now, and forever. Disease cannot have any reality because sick thinking, feeling, belief or conditions can be changed by a change in consciousness. These can be changed because they are not God’s eternal creation but man’s distorted temporal formation. The Unity Correspondence Course material states:
Every one instinctively feels that there must be a way to health, an exact, sure way founded upon principle. There is such a way. It may be found by the earnest student in the doctrine of Jesus Christ.... If a cause is removed its effect disappears. This is the right and only sure method of wiping out the appearance of disease.... If mental and physical discords were real they could not be healed.
—Series 1, lesson 2 material, pages 1 and 2.
From our Father in heaven or from the perfect life we originate, and because there is nothing in God, Divine Mind, other than perfection in ail ways, our heritage is health, wholeness, and perfection here and now and forever.
—Series 1, Lesson 2, Annotation 3.
...no one but a metaphysician knows the origin of disease germs. The physician takes it for granted that disease germs exist as an integral part of the natural world; the metaphysician sees disease germs as the manifested results of anger, revenge, jealousy, fear, impurity, and many other mind activities. A change of mind will change the character of a germ. Love, courage, peace, strength, and good will form good character and build bodily structures of a nature like these qualities of mind.
—Charles Fillmore, Atom-Smashing Power of Mind, page 104.
Those who study the life of Jesus in its personal aspect, to the exclusion of the spiritual, sense the wonderful possibilities within man and the universe. One who does not develop his own spiritual nature cannot see the spiritual nature of Jesus or in other men who are following Jesus in the regeneration.
—Charles Fillmore, Atom-Smashing Power of Mind, page 166.
Health, real health, is from within and does not have to be manufactured in the without. It is the normal condition of man, a condition true to the reality of his being.
—Charles Fillmore, Keep A True Tent, page 173.
The affirmation of any good statement of health puts us in conscious contact with the Christ Mind universal and quickens and releases the energy stored up in the subconscious mtnd, and the process of rejuvenation begins its work.
—Charles Fillmore, Atom-Smashing Power of Mind, page 101.
... abundant life is always present. When we recognise it and open our consciousness to it, it comes flowing into mind and body with its mighty quickening, healing power, and they are renewed and transformed.
—Charles Fillmore, Prosperity, page 101.
Meditation in the Silence
1. Choose a time and a place where you will be alone and undisturbed for at least 20 minutes.
2. Assume a comfortable position so that there is no feeling of tension or strain in your body.
3. If sitting, place both feet flat upon the floor. Put your hands comfortably in your lap with either both palms up to receive blessings, or with the left palm up and the right down to receive and give a blessing.
4. Close your eyes, be still, and relax.
5. Focus your attention upon your head and begin to relax the muscles in your scalp, face, and neck. Say softly or silently:
In the name of Jesus Christ relax, relax, relax. Peace, be still; wait upon the Lord only.
6. When you are ready, move your attention to trunk, arms and legs and repeat:
In the name of Jesus Christ relax, relax, relax. Peace, be still; wait upon the Lord only.
7. Now bring your attention to the throat and the power center where the creative Word is forming to give life, substance, and intelligence to your declared word of faith. Affirm softly and then several times silently:
I am surrounded and enfolded in the perfect life of God; that life force energises every cell of my body and displaces anything unlike itself.
8. Rest in the silence letting the affirmation reveal its Truth to you.
9. When you are ready, return your awareness first to your physical body, and then to your surroundings as you re-enter your world.
