Tartan, tär'-tan (Heb. fr. Pers.)--embodiment of the law; extended preceptor; greatest extension; commander in chief; general.

Tartan is not a proper name, but is the title of an Assyrian officer who was sent by the king of Assyria with a great army against Jerusalem (II Kings 18:17).

Meta. The executive activity, or seeming power of execution, that belongs to the ruling sense-reasoning phase of the will in man that is signified by Sennacherib, king of Assyria. (Tartan was a commander in chief or general of this king, and was sent with the Assyrian army against Jerusalem. See SENNACHERIB and ASSYRIA.)
