Metaphysical meaning of Potiphar (mbd)
Potiphar, pot'-;-phär (Heb. fr. Egypt.) --dedicated to Ra; belonging to the sun.
An officer of Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and captain of his guard; the man to whom Joseph was sold (Gen. 37:36).
Meta. An executive thought or quality in that consciousness which Pharaoh indicates. (See PHARAOH.)
The understanding and the will should be especially active in one who would master the sensations of the body. Potiphar's wife (Gen. 39:7-20) represents the sense consciousness of the soul that tempts us to meet its desires and, when we deny her, has us put into jail. This means that when a habit in the sense consciousness is refused expression it reacts and for a time seems to lock up even the expression of the good through us. But let us patiently bide our time; the higher will yet show its God-given power.
