Metaphysical meaning of Heber (mbd)
Heber, he'-ber (Heb.)--that which passes further; on the other side; a passing over; a going beyond; ultramundane; beyond the terrestrial; not of this world; hidden from sense; occult.
a Grandson of Asher (Gen. 46:17). b Heber the Kenite was the husband of Jael, who killed Sisera, captain of the hosts of Jabin, king of Canaan (Judg. 4:17). c A Judahite (I Chron. 4:18). d A Benjamite (I Chron. 8:17).
Meta. A passing over from the purely sensate, physical, earthly thought to a higher concept of religious Truth. This is the beginning of a conscious alliance with the mind of Spirit, and it will culminate in man and God's becoming companions, associates, friends, and, in a sense, equals: "Ye therefore shall be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect" (Matt. 5:48); "No longer do I call you servants...but I have called you friends" (John 15:15).
The names Heber and Eber in the Bible seem to be the same. (See EBER.) There is an idea held among the Jewish people that the term Hebrew is derived from the Eber of Genesis 10:24, who is believed to be an ancestor of Abraham (in the Authorized Version, in Luke 3: 35, the name is written Heber).
