Perez (in A.V., Genesis 38:29, Pharez; in Luke, 3:33, Phares), pe'-rez (Heb.)--broken through; breached; torn asunder; demolished; rent; assaulted; defeated; dispersed; scattered; spread abroad; increased; abundant; redundant.

A son of Judah by his daughter-in-law Tamar (Gen. 38:29; see I Chronicles 27:3 also).

Meta. Victory through praise, or making a way out of apparent limitation and error and predominating over them by means of prayer and praise. Perez means broken through, torn asunder, dispersed. Judah, father of Perez, signifies praise; his mother, Tamar, meaning palm tree, erect, represents uprightness and victory. Judah said of her, "She is more righteous than I" (Gen. 38:26).
