Metaphysically Interpreting Psalms 106:1-48
106:1Praise ye Jehovah.
Oh give thanks unto Jehovah; for he is good;
For his lovingkindness endureth forever.
106:2Who can utter the mighty acts of Jehovah,
Or show forth all his praise?
106:3Blessed are they that keep justice,
And he that doeth righteousness at all times.
106:4Remember me, O Jehovah, with the favor that thou bearest unto thy people;
Oh visit me with thy salvation,
106:5That I may see the prosperity of thy chosen,
That I may rejoice in the gladness of thy nation,
That I may glory with thine inheritance.
106:6We have sinned with our fathers,
We have committed iniquity, we have done wickedly.
106:7Our fathers understood not
thy wonders in Egypt;
They remembered not the multitude of thy lovingkindnesses,
But were rebellious at the sea, even at the Red Sea.
106:8Nevertheless he saved them for his name's sake,
That he might make his mighty power to be known.
106:9He rebuked the Red Sea also, and it was dried up:
So he led them through the depths, as through a wilderness.
106:10And he saved them from the hand of him that hated them,
And redeemed them from the hand of the enemy.
106:11And the waters covered their adversaries;
There was not one of them left.
106:12Then believed they his words;
They sang his praise.
106:13They soon forgat his works;
They waited not for his counsel,
106:14But lusted exceedingly in the wilderness,
And tempted God in the desert.
106:15And he gave them their request,
But sent leanness into their soul.
106:16They envied Moses also in the camp,
And Aaron the saint of Jehovah.
106:17The earth opened and swallowed up Dathan,
And covered the company of Abiram.
106:18And a fire was kindled in their company;
The flame burned up the wicked.
106:19They made a calf in Horeb,
And worshipped a molten image.
106:20Thus they changed their glory
For the likeness of an ox that eateth grass.
106:21They forgat God their Saviour,
Who had done great things in Egypt,
106:22Wondrous works in the land of Ham,
And terrible things by the Red Sea.
106:24Yea, they despised the pleasant land,
They believed not his word,
106:25But murmured in their tents,
And hearkened not unto the voice of Jehovah.
106:26Therefore he sware unto them,
That he would overthrow them in the wilderness,
106:27And that he would overthrow their seed among the nations,
And scatter them in the lands.
106:28They joined themselves also unto Baal-peor,
And ate the sacrifices of the dead.
106:29Thus they provoked him to anger with their doings;
And the plague brake in upon them.
106:30Then stood up Phinehas, and executed judgment;
And so the plague was stayed.
106:31And that was reckoned unto him for righteousness,
Unto all generations for evermore.
106:34They did not destroy the peoples,
As Jehovah commanded them,
106:35But mingled themselves with the nations,
And learned their works,
106:36And served their idols,
Which became a snare unto them.
106:37Yea, they sacrificed their sons
and their daughters unto demons,
106:38And shed innocent blood,
Even the blood of their sons and of their daughters,
Whom they sacrificed unto the idols of Canaan;
And the land was polluted with blood.
106:39Thus were they defiled with their works,
And played the harlot in their doings.
106:40Therefore was the wrath of Jehovah kindled against his people,
And he abhorred his inheritance.
106:41And he gave them into the hand of the nations;
And they that hated them ruled over them.
106:42Their enemies also oppressed them,
And they were brought into subjection under their hand.
106:43Many times did he deliver them;
But they were rebellious in their counsel,
And were brought low in their iniquity.
106:44Nevertheless he regarded their distress,
When he heard their cry:
106:45And he remembered for them his covenant,
And repented according to the multitude of his lovingkindnesses.
106:46He made them also to be pitied
Of all those that carried them captive.
106:47Save us, O Jehovah our God,
And gather us from among the nations,
To give thanks unto thy holy name,
And to triumph in thy praise.
June 16, 1918: Psalms 106:1-12
What is meant by: “Praise ye Jehovah”? To praise Jehovah is to acknowledge God as the ever-present I Am, the quickening, healing, prospering power, and to give thanks and honor to him is conforming to the Divine Law of Being.
Why is this healing, prospering power sometimes lost sight of? When man gives the power of his thoughts to materiality, becomes absorbed in effects (physical expression, property, position), he loses sight of the Truth of his being.
What is the result? He becomes negative, fearful, lets go, gives up to material conditions.
How does this affect the body? Having lost conscious connection with the health-giving Life and purifying fire of Spirit, he has formed his body out of the substance of his material thoughts. These thoughts, including negative, watery, limited subconscious beliefs, begin to show forth in the body as weakness of function, or abnormal growths.
How are these beliefs and conditions overcome? Denial of the belief that there is power in things or conditions apart from God consciousness, followed by acknowledgment of the healing, purifying Presence of God through Christ Jesus.
How may one be assured of continuance of the inner realization of the renewing, transforming life of God that manifests in health and strength? By daily prayer, laying hold on God by thoughts and words of Truth, and conforming to the Divine Law, as it is revealed by the Spirit of Truth. “Praise ye Jehovah.” “Give thanks unto Jehovah.” “Blessed are they that keep Justice, and he that doeth righteousness at all times.”
December 28, 1919: Psalms 106:1-12
Why should we continually give thanks unto Jehovah? We should continually give thanks unto Jehovah for Truth. The truth is, his loving-kindness is ever towards us. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
Why should we rely fully on the Divine Law for justice? We should rely fully on the Divine Law for justice, because it gives to every one his very own, and cannot be swerved by God or man. “Verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.” The soul that lives close to Spirit knows this, and rests all judgment and the meting out of justice to the Law.
How may we be especially remembered with divine favors? If we would that the Law of Justice exercise less severity towards us, we must get a better understanding of the Law and follow it, and also continually exercise less severity towards others. Forgiveness, mercy and pardon, expressed in thought and act, inject into every situation a higher aspect of the Law, and the Universal Good is thereby glorified.
From a metaphysical viewpoint what do “our fathers . . . in Egypt” here represent? They typify inherited religious beliefs, which have sunk down into darkness and uneasiness and uncertainty. Therefore, they are unruly, rebellious, and through ignorance, have to be driven into the very light they are seeking.
Why is this state of consciousness one of the first to be redeemed? Because, fundamentally, it is good, truth seeking (though in a blind way) the path of redemption. It is also redeemed in order to show forth the mighty power of God.
What is the lesson for everyone who is wading through deep waters, who is crossing the Red Sea? To lay hold of God, and to refuse to believe in the [text is cut off] "passist through the Waters, I will be with thee through the rivers, thy shall not overflow thee."
